Storage advice
Proper storage is essential to preserve the quality and flavor of aged tequila. Here are detailed suggestions for both unopened and opened bottles:
Optimal Temperature:
Store aged tequila in a cool place ideally between 50-65°F (10-18°C). Consistent temperatures are key as extreme cold or heat and especially drastic fluctuations can cause the liquid to expand and contract potentially compromising the bottle's seal or affecting its taste. Avoid storing tequila near heat sources like stoves heaters or windows. Refrigeration is not necessary and can even alter the flavor profile and diminish aromatic qualities.
Light Exposure:
Always store aged tequila in a dark place away from direct sunlight or strong artificial light. UV rays can trigger chemical reactions that alter the tequila's flavor aroma and color over time. A liquor cabinet pantry or cellar is ideal. If your storage area has clear glass consider covering the bottles to prevent light from passing through.
Sealing:
Unopened Bottles: The original seal should prevent air from entering the bottle.
Opened Bottles: Minimize air exposure to prevent oxidation which can gradually diminish the tequila's dynamic flavor and character. Always tightly seal the bottle after every use using the original cap or a stopper designed for spirits. If the original cork is worn or damaged consider transferring the tequila to an airtight container. For added protection against evaporation and oxidation you can use Parafilm or a similar stretchy self-sealing film wrapped around the cap seal. Some collectors also suggest using argon gas sprays to displace oxygen. If a significant portion of the tequila has been consumed consider transferring the remaining liquid to a smaller bottle to reduce the amount of air in contact with the liquid.
Bottle Position:
Always store aged tequila bottles upright. Unlike wine tequila's high alcohol content can cause the cork to degrade if it remains in prolonged contact with the liquid potentially affecting the tequila's flavor.
Humidity:
While not as critical as for wine a stable humidity level around 60-70% (or between 50-80%) can help maintain the integrity of corks and labels for long-term storage. Excessively humid environments can lead to mold growth on corks and labels while low humidity can dry out corks potentially leading to a compromised seal. If you cannot control humidity remove the bottle from any packaging and wrap it in cling film to protect the label.
Special Storage Tips:
Once opened it is generally recommended to consume aged tequila within six months to a year for the best flavor experience. While tequila does not expire in the traditional sense its quality can change over time especially after opening due to oxidation and alcohol evaporation. If the tequila shows changes in color aroma or flavor it may be past its prime. In rare cases if it develops a foul taste or scent it is best to avoid consuming it.
