Storage advice
To optimally store Aged Rum follow these practical recommendations regarding temperature light sealing bottle position humidity and specific considerations for both unopened and opened bottles:
- Temperature: Maintain a consistent cool temperature ideally between 59–68°F (15–20°C). Avoid heat and temperature fluctuations as these accelerate evaporation and degrade flavor.
- Light Exposure: Store rum in a dark place away from direct sunlight or strong artificial light. If the bottle comes in a box keep it inside the box for additional light protection. Exposure to light can deteriorate the quality over time.
- Sealing: Ensure the bottle is tightly sealed to prevent evaporation and oxidation. For bottles with real corks check them regularly and tighten if needed. If the cork is natural rotate the bottle every few months to keep the cork moist and prevent it from drying out and shrinking which could allow air in. Avoid using pour spouts or leaving bottles unsealed for extended periods.
- Bottle Position: Store bottles upright rather than lying on their sides. Unlike wine high-alcohol spirits like rum can degrade corks if the liquid is in prolonged contact risking seal failure and oxidation.
- Humidity: Maintain a moderate humidity level to help preserve cork quality and prevent label damage. Too dry conditions can cause corks to shrink and allow air ingress while excessive humidity can damage labels and packaging.
- Storage for Unopened Bottles: An unopened bottle has an effectively indefinite shelf life if stored as above. There's no continued aging in the bottle so aging quality is preserved but does not improve.
- Storage for Opened Bottles: Once opened rum remains safe indefinitely but quality degrades over time due to oxidation. To extend flavor longevity keep the bottle sealed tightly and if the bottle is less than half-full consider transferring the remaining rum to a smaller bottle to reduce air contact. Ideally consume within 6 months to 2 years depending on exposure.
Avoid storing rum in the freezer as although rum won't freeze at typical household freezer temperatures it is unnecessary and offers no preservation benefit. Following these guidelines will help preserve the flavor and quality of aged rum for as long as possible.
