Description

Introducing the Clonakilla Canberra District Shiraz/Viognier 2022, a remarkable red wine crafted from grapes sourced exclusively from two family-owned vineyards near the tranquil village of Murrumbateman in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. With an elevation of 600 metres above sea level, this region benefits from a cool climate that creates a unique environment for grape cultivation. The 2022 vintage stands out, as the cool season allowed for an extended ripening period, imparting an extraordinary intensity of flavour and depth to the wine.

The blend consists of 95% Shiraz and 5% Viognier, reflecting the harmony and complexity of the Canberra District. Through a meticulous fermentation process where 25% whole bunches were used, and all parcels were co-fermented with 5% Viognier, this red wine showcases:

  • Aromas: Lush notes of ripe red berries, roses, and violets accompanied by an intricate layering of spices.
  • Palate: Silky texture with an elegant balance of vibrant acidity and structured tannins, revealing flavours of sweet-savory layers, spiced pastrami, and roasted beetroot.
  • Finish: A lingering experience filled with warm Sichuan peppercorns and clove, rounded out by subtle nuances of licorice and black tea.

This bone dry red wine is best served slightly chilled at 14-16°C to elevate its vibrant fruit and spicy notes while maintaining enough warmth to reveal its complexities. We recommend presenting it in large, tulip-shaped glasses to maximize aroma release. Perfect pairing suggestions include:

  • Grilled lamb koftas seasoned with cumin and coriander.
  • Roasted duck breast drizzled with a red wine reduction sauce made from the wine itself.
  • An elegant cheese board featuring aged Manchego and smoked Gouda.
  • Dark chocolate and black pepper dessert to round off a sophisticated evening.

Whether for an intimate dinner or autumnal gatherings, the Clonakilla Canberra District Shiraz/Viognier 2022 promises a captivating tasting journey, revealing the remarkable essence of its region with each sip.

Storage advice

For storing red wine maintain an optimal temperature between 60°F and 65°F (16°C to 18°C) especially suitable for full-bodied reds like Shiraz. This prevents premature aging or slowing of maturation. Avoid fluctuations to preserve balance and flavor development.

Keep the bottle in a dark environment away from direct light sources since light exposure can degrade and alter the wine. A wine cellar basement or a closed wine cabinet with UV protection works well.

Ensure humidity around 70% to keep the cork moist and prevent it from drying out and shrinking which could lead to oxidation.

Store the bottle on its side to keep the cork in contact with the wine maintaining its seal over long periods.

For an unopened bottle these conditions will maximize shelf life and quality.

If the bottle has been opened reseal tightly using a wine stopper or vacuum seal to limit oxygen exposure and store it upright at a slightly cooler temperature around 55°F (13°C) to slow oxidation; finish consuming within a few days to a week for best preservation.
