Tasting notes

In the glass, the wine has a deep brown core with an amber rim. The nose opens with a rich, yet fresh bouquet of rose petals, preserved fruit and nuts. Luscious flavours of sweet spices and dried fruit fill the mouth with a long finish, hinting of oak. It is captivating for its rich and intense flavour. With an average age of around eight years, the Classic Muscat has freshness and varietal character balanced by subtle age complexity from time in barrel.

Nose

The bouquet is rich and complex, yet remarkably fresh. Dominant notes of rose petals, dried fruits (especially raisins, figs, and sultanas) are prominent. These are beautifully interwoven with aromas of candied orange peel, sticky date pudding, and Christmas spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Hints of nuts (walnuts, almonds), toffee, caramel, and a subtle espresso or dark chocolate note add further depth.

Palate

The palate is lusciously sweet and full-bodied, enveloping the mouth with its viscous texture. Flavors of sweet spices and dried fruit are at the forefront, echoing the nose. Expect an intense concentration of raisin, fig, and prune, balanced by notes of caramel, butterscotch, and honey. There's a captivating freshness and vibrancy that prevents it from being cloyingly sweet, often underpinned by a subtle nutty rancio character from the oxidative aging. Hints of oak provide structure and a gentle warmth.

Finish

The finish is long, persistent, and incredibly satisfying. Lingering notes of dried fruit, sweet spices, and a hint of oak gradually fade, leaving a clean, yet rich impression. There's often a pleasing balance between sweetness and a refreshing acidity that makes you crave another sip.

Serving suggestions

Based on the rich complex profile of the Morris of Rutherglen Classic Liqueur Muscat 50 CL here are some creative and unique serving suggestions:

The "Australian Affogato" Twist: Instead of pouring it over plain vanilla ice cream pour a shot over macadamia nut ice cream and sprinkle with smoked sea salt flakes for a balance of sweet nutty and savory.

Muscat Old Fashioned: Use it as the sweet component in an Old Fashioned cocktail (substituting simple syrup/sugar cube). Mix 45 ml of good quality barrel-aged gin or rum 15 ml of the Muscat and two dashes of chocolate bitters. Serve over a large ice cube with an orange twist.

Savory Cheese Finish: Pair not with soft blue cheese but with aged cheddar or a hard salty cheese like Parmigiano-Reggiano after the dessert course to contrast the wine's intensity with umami and salt.

Frozen Dessert Cups: Freeze the wine lightly into a semi-freddo or granita consistency and serve in small chilled espresso cups as a highly aromatic intense palate cleanser before a final digestif.

Warming Winter Serve: Gently warm a small measure (no more than 40 C with a cinnamon stick and a shaving of fresh nutmeg. Serve in a small ceramic tumbler as a decadent hot toddy alternative.

Cocktail Ingredient (The "Rutherglen Royale"): Mix 30ml of the Muscat with a splash of ginger ale or a good quality neutral tonic water and serve with plenty of ice and a garnish of a dried fig on a skewer.

Storage advice

This fortified wine requires specific conditions to preserve its quality especially since it is bottled under a cork closure.

Unopened Bottle Storage

Temperature: Store in a cool consistent environment ideally between 10 C and 18 C 50 F and 64 F. Consistency is more important than the exact temperature. Avoid rapid temperature fluctuations.

Light Exposure: Store in complete darkness. The intensity of the wine's color and flavor is sensitive to UV light which can cause premature aging and color degradation.

Bottle Position: Store the bottle horizontally (on its side) if it has a traditional cork. This keeps the cork in constant contact with the wine preventing it from drying out shrinking and allowing oxygen ingress.

Humidity: Maintain a moderate to high humidity level (around 60% to 75% to prevent the cork from drying out.

Special Note (Ageing): This style of Liqueur Muscat is already mature upon release having been aged for several years in the Solera system. While it is stable it is generally not intended for significant further bottle ageing. Store in conditions that maintain its current state rather than attempting to age it further.

Opened Bottle Storage

Sealing: Due to its high alcohol content (around 17.5% ABV and sugar this fortified wine is highly stable after opening compared to unfortified table wine. Re-seal the bottle immediately and tightly with the original cork or a suitable stopper.

Temperature: Once opened storage in a cool place is still best but refrigeration 4 C will extend its life significantly minimizing further oxidation.

Light Exposure: Keep the opened bottle away from light.

Bottle Position: Store the opened bottle vertically (upright) to minimize the wine's exposure to the cork stopper and reduce the surface area exposed to oxygen in the headspace.

Shelf Life: When re-corked tightly and refrigerated the quality of the Morris of Rutherglen Classic Liqueur Muscat 50 CL can be maintained for several weeks or even a couple of months though the freshest flavors will fade over time. The wine will not "turn" quickly like a table wine but its complexity will gradually diminish due to oxidation.
