Storage advice
For optimal storage of Port (including Tawny Port):
- Temperature: Store consistently between 13°C and 20°C (55°F to 68°F) ideally around 12–18°C. Avoid fluctuations to prevent cork seal damage and spoilage.
- Light Exposure: Keep the bottle in a dark place away from direct sunlight and artificial light (especially UV) which can degrade flavor and color.
- Sealing: Maintain the integrity of the cork. For unopened bottles with cork stoppers ensure the cork stays moist to prevent shrinking and oxidation. This requires proper humidity and bottle positioning.
- Bottle Position: Store bottles with corks lying on their side so the liquid keeps the cork moist. If the closure is a T-top or stopper store upright. For certain modern bottles with longer necks and larger air gaps an angled position (about 30-45°) can help keep the cork in contact with the liquid and reduce leakage risk.
- Humidity: Maintain relative humidity around 70%. Too low humidity dries corks; too high causes mold and label damage.
- Other Tips: Avoid vibration and frequent movement which can disturb sediment and accelerate cork deterioration. Store away from strong odors as corks can absorb them and affect the port’s aroma.
For opened bottles port can be preserved for a few weeks if recorked tightly and stored in a cool dark place or refrigerated but quality diminishes faster once exposed to air.
These practical conditions apply equally to Gift Boxed and regular bottles for preserving quality and shelf life.
